Securing Britain's Energy Future Seminar
UK Energy Security of Supply in an Era of Import Dependency

Wednesday 17 May 2006 • One Great George Street, Westminster, London

UK Security of Supply Seminar - Wednesday 17 May 2006, One Great Georges Street, Westminster, London

Securing Britain's Energy Future

The United Kingdom has moved from relative self-sufficiency in energy to the position of major net importer more rapidly that most commentators had expected. The current very high international energy prices and recent high-profile supply interruptions abroad have brought the risks inherent in this position into very sharp focus. Energy Security of Supply is now a major issue for the United Kingdom, and the government has placed it at the heart of its ongoing review of national energy policy. View the Seminar Programme >>

The UK Energy System

Given the structure of the UK’s energy consumption it would seem there are no obvious or quick-fix solutions. Indeed there is a vigorous debate underway in relation to the contribution different fuels and technologies can make.

The challenge therefore, first and foremost, is to examine the possibilities for ameliorating oil and gas import dependency. It will be necessary to evaluate the future of the nuclear sector and develop strategies for sustainability and for growth of the renewables sector, while examining potential contributions from clean coal technology, gas storage and LNG
